County sets record for annual interest earnings

As predicted, Union County hit record interest income for 2024 despite fourth quarter earnings dipping slightly compared to the previous year. During the county’s investment advisory committee report on Feb. 5, Treasurer Andrew Smarra told the county commissioners that by the end of 2024, investment income hit $5,625,000.

That’s up by nearly $1 million, compared to $4.5 million in 2023. Of that $5.6 million amount, just under $5 million of that went to the general fund.

The treasurer invests money from all of the county entities, but not all of that money goes into the general fund for spending, he said.
