Locals take part in Japanese show

Agriculture in Union County might bring to mind corn, soybeans, hay and other traditional crops synonymous with midwestern farming. What might not come to mind is Japanese edamame, but that is precisely what landed two Union County farmers on a primetime reality show in Japan.

“I got a message through Instagram asking to be on a Japanese TV show,” said Shelly Detwiler, who runs Mitchell’s Berries and Blooms with her husband, Paul. “And I just said ‘sure.’” Reflecting after the show finally aired last month, she said it was a bit of a whirlwind experience. “It was amazing, the whole experience went from earlier this year, February to August,” she said. “And no…
