Former sheriff reflects on presidential visit

More than a week out from the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, former Union County Sheriff John Overly said it is tremendously difficult to prepare for the visit of a high profile politician.
Overly would know. As the county’s chief law enforcement officer on Sept. 26, 1992, when then-President George Bush visited the community, Overly was part of the team providing security for the presidential visit.
“That was probably the highlight of my career, boarding the presidential train and meeting the president.”
He laughed, adding, “that was a long time ago.”
